Reconnect with family and friends at Robin Hoods Bay

Things to do in & around Robin Hood's Bay

Seafern Cottage is just over an hours drive from York in Fylingthorpe.  We are in a prime location for exploring Yorkshire's coastal villages and for beach holidays, Sandsend, Whitby, Robin Hood's Bay and Scarborough are all on our doorstep.  There is a regular bus service to Whitby and Scarborough.  Venture inland and explore the North York Moors villages of Danby and Goathland (the picturesque town where Heartbeat was filmed). The North Yorkshire Moors Railway (NYMR) heritage steam trains run from Whitby to Pickering and stop at the famous Harry Potter station in Goathland.

Walking

The Cleveland Way National Trail is a 109 mile walking route through beautiful and ever-changing landscapes and scenery. The inland section takes you across the breathtaking heather moorland of the North York Moors National Park, before reaching the coast at Saltburn-by-the-Sea. From here the coastal section takes you through some of England’s best coastal towns including Robin Hood’s Bay, Scarborough and Whitby! Explore bite sized sections of this national trail from Sea Fern Holiday Cottage or make 4 days of your stay into a Cleveland way self guided walking holiday with our free guide.  If you are an avid walker you can also experience some of the best walks in the North York Moors with Paul Beal's ultimate Directory.

Cycling

The Cinder Track is a 21 mile, traffic free route that is perfect for families. The route begins in the fantastic seaside town of Scarborough, where you can hire bikes at Bayhire. From here this repurposed railway line is signed all the way to Whitby. The section from Scarborough to Seafern Cottage is around 15 miles and would take families around 2.5 hours and it takes just an hour to cycle the 6 miles into Whitby. Dalby Forest is a 36 minute drive away and it offers a fantastic opportunity for mountain biking. Exploring this stunning forest on two wheels will leave you grinning from ear to ear. You could contact Steve at Chasing Trails Mountain Biking and book a MTB skills coaching course, or guided mountain biking on the North York Moors. Find out more in our blog about cycling holidays in Yorkshire.

Surf School and Waterpark

If you fancy catching your first wave or experiencing our beautiful coastline stood on a paddle board Whitby Surf School has everything you could need to make your day at the beach unique and unforgettable. You can hire wetsuits and equipement by the hour or sign up to the club which runs Monday to Thursday in the holidays.  The Yorkshire Water Park near Scarborough is well worth a visit for the incredible inflatable assault course.  Other activities available include an zip line, escape room, climbing wallk, kayaking, paddleboarding and sailing to name just a few.

Fossil Hunting

Robin Hoods Bay, Whitby, Runswick and Sandsend beaches are renowned for fossils, but one of our favourite beaches is 5 miles away and a 10 minute drive from Sea Fern Cottage at a little known secluded beach called Saltwick Bay. You can find out more about this and fossil hunting in our blog.
