5 THINGS TO DO AT TWIXMAS

5 Things to do During Twixmas

The only rule for Twixmas is that there are no rules; this is the one week of the year between Xmas and New Year when anything goes. Whether you want to relax as much as possible, go for long walks, or simply read, read, read and watch old movies all week, it’s your call.

December is typically very busy. Some years it’s frantic and passes in a blur of shopping, wrapping and Christmas prep, so you often don’t get to do many Christmassy things. Twixmas is the perfect time to slow down, re-charge and indulge in doing some of the things you love. It also tends to be one of the few weeks of the year when the whole family is off school and work together. Make the most of it!

These are our favourite things to do during Twixmas at Seafern Cottage

  1. Complete a giant jigsaw puzzle - Those 1000 piece jigsaws take a long time to complete and if you can convince the family to help complete it with you then this already mindful activity becomes a thoroughly enjoyable social time together.

  1. Do some Twixmas cooking - You’ve nowhere to be, so spend the afternoon in the kitchen trying out some of the recipes from a new cookery book. We can recommend ‘River Cottage Veg Every Day! by Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall’. It’s on our bookshelf and I find the recipes great for boosting energy levels by packing more veg into my diet.

  1. Read a novel, a biography or a self development book – I often feel guilty readying for pleasure during the day, but when on holiday and without the usual distractions I have no problem at all. It’s also a great opportunity to read a motivational self development books before we embark on our New Years resolutions.

  1. Walk, walk and then do some more walking. I find the far reaching coastal views and endless fresh air on the beach or the Cleveland Way the perfect time for formulating ideas and resolutions. Try using a quiet walk alone or in the company of loved one to formulate a few of next year’s goals and projects. A little bit of planning now will mean you’ll be raring to go come the first day of the New Year.

  1. Try a new craft – There can be too many distractions at home to be creative, but it can be a great bonding experience if you and family members are making something together. I bought some travel slipper kits for my family this Christmas and I’m hoping they might all get involved rather than migrating towards technology.  I can recommend the kits from Joes Toes. They’re not cheap, but the kits are so well thought out that you will have some very useable travel slippers to take on holiday for years to come.

I hope this post gives you some inspiration and ideas for what to do over Twixmas. It’s your chance to slow down, cosy up, enjoy a bit of family time and some well-earned rest. If you’re able to book a few days away it will all be made so much easier. Enjoy!
